Legacy Society

Make a powerful statement of your commitment to the future of the geosciences by including the AAPG Foundation in your estate plan.

About the Legacy Society

Legacy Society

A planned gift to the AAPG Foundation is one of the most meaningful ways to ensure the geosciences thrive for generations to come.

The AAPG Foundation Legacy Society honors individuals who have made estate planning gifts to support geoscience education and research. By designating the AAPG Foundation in your estate plan, you join a distinguished group of donors who have made a lasting commitment to the profession they love.

There is no minimum gift amount and no formal application process. You simply choose the planned giving method that works best for your financial and estate planning goals, and notify us of your intention so we can recognize and thank you appropriately.

We recommend consulting with your financial advisor, attorney, or estate planner to determine which planned giving option is most advantageous for your situation. Tax laws vary and individual circumstances differ.

Ways to Join the Legacy Society

Eight giving options — choose the approach that fits your financial situation and goals.

Bequest

A gift through your will or living trust to AAPG Foundation programs. Bequests may qualify for estate tax deductions and are among the most common forms of planned giving.

Charitable Trust

Legal trust mechanisms that allow you to set conditions on how assets are distributed, potentially reducing income and estate taxes while supporting the Foundation.

Charitable Gift Funds

Tax-deductible donations made through donor-advised fund providers such as Fidelity Charitable or Vanguard Charitable, then recommended to the AAPG Foundation.

Stock Gift

Donating appreciated securities held for more than one year lets you avoid capital gains taxes while receiving a charitable deduction for the full fair market value.

Real Property

Gifts of real estate — including your residence, a farm, vacation property, or commercial buildings — can provide significant tax advantages while benefiting the Foundation.

Royalties

Assign ongoing production royalties to the AAPG Foundation. This option is particularly relevant to the geoscience community and can provide sustained, long-term support.

Retirement Plan

Name the AAPG Foundation as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k), or other retirement account. Retirement assets can be among the most tax-efficient assets to leave to charity.

Life Insurance

Transfer ownership of an existing policy to the Foundation, or simply name the Foundation as a beneficiary — a low-cost way to make a significant future gift.
