History & Mission

From a bold challenge in 1967 to more than $20 million invested in geoscience — the story of the AAPG Foundation.

The Vision That Started It All

AAPG Foundation History and Mission

"Let's do what we can today to ensure that AAPG and the geosciences will be strong tomorrow."
— Michel T. Halbouty, AAPG President, 1967

The AAPG Foundation was born from a challenge. In 1967, AAPG President Michel T. Halbouty envisioned a future where the geosciences would be supported by a dedicated, enduring foundation — one that could connect the generosity of today's professionals with the potential of tomorrow's.

On April 4, 1967, the Declaration of Trust was signed, officially creating the AAPG Foundation. What began as a bold vision has grown into an organization that has invested more than $20 million in educational and scientific activities in geology worldwide.

In 1986, the Corporation was formed to establish a permanent entity to conduct educational, charitable, and scientific activities related to or allied with the field of geology — ensuring the Foundation's long-term stability and independence.
